Currently character recognition is of poor quality to be rendered useless, at least, in the open source sphere. Consider the scenario of where one takes a LaTeX document and compile it into a PDF file. Can this process be reversed to get a reasonably accurate LaTeX file, also is it possible to get a high quality LaTeX rendering of mathematical text that was created PRIOR to the creation of TeX/LaTeX.
