Fundamentals of Composite Materials

This course is geared towards upper-level engineering students in Mechanical, Civil, Material Science, or Aerospace degree programs (or similar) and serves to introduce the basic concepts of composite materials and structures. Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with fabrication of composite structures and mechanical analysis of fiber-reinforced materials and sandwich structures commonly used in Aerospace and other industries.
The objective of this course is to discuss and understand the following topics:
- How fiber-reinforced composite materials differ from isotropic materials in terms of design
solutions, fabrication, complexity, constitutive behavior, and failure modes.
- How the increased complexity of composite materials drives overall cost.
- Orthotropic stiffness analysis of a lamina and a laminate using Classical Lamination Theory
(1st order).
- Lamina design using a Micromechanics approach.
- Common laminate designs and nomenclature.
- Concepts of lamina and laminate failure.
- Stiffness and Strength analysis of Sandwich Panels.
- Design of attachments for composite structures.
- Presentation of technical material to a group of peers and managers.
