On the backend side, experience in the PHP language is essential, for a developer working with Magento 2, knowledge of PHP 5.6-7 specifically is whats important. He will also need skill level knowledge of OOP that follows SOLID principles, since Magento development requires him to understand the complicated class structures. A good Magento Developer will be familiar with MVC architecture and the rules of modular development.
